Zion Williamson was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans number 1 overall in the 2019 NBA draft, he is a monster weighing in at 285 lbs at 6 ft 7 inches tall. So far he has been nothing short of spectacular. Despite being injured for the first half of the season, he has rebounded like he’s been playing basketball all his life (oh wait, he has) becoming the first NBA rookie to to record seven 20 point games in the first nine career games while being the sixth teenager in NBA history to record five consecutive 22-point games joining the elite list with LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving, Andrew Wiggins and Luka Doncic, all this he accomplished in his first nine games of his rookie season. It appears Zion has already adjusted comfortably to the NBA, could you imagine the crazy stats he would rack up in a full season barring no injuries!
He grew up in an athletic family in Salisbury, North Carolina, his parents got him into basketball around 5 years old, his mother was a track star in her younger days and his father was a defensive lineman at NC State, his mother remarried to a former basketball player from Clemson who helped developed Zion’s art on the court; and his name comes from the spiritual meaning, Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
Zion was a natural talent, one of a kind at the high school and college level, he attended Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he made a mind blowing dunk in his 2016-2017 school year, a 360 degree dunk which landed on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays on ESPN. This was the beginning for the 16 year old YouTube sensation as his celebrity status continues to grow to this day. No strangers in showing off their dunking abilities, Dr. Jay, Michael Jordan, Vince Carter and Brent Barry have all won dunking contests by taking shots near the free throw line, however Zion with his superhero ways can leap dead on from the foul lane straight to the hoop. He chalks up another instant national exposure, back in 2017, Zion was featured as the only 16 year old on the front cover of Slam Magazine. Zion was such a hot commodity in his high school days that Drake has worn his jersey. In the past, the rapper has been seen wearing high school jerseys of NBA players but never before of one who’s still attends high school.
Despite wanting to follow his stepfather’s footsteps in going to Clemson, he attended Duke University from 2018 - 2019. How could anyone forget the nationally televised game between rivals Duke vs UNC? Zion’s Nike sneaker broke apart only 36 seconds into the game, he was out for Duke’s last 6 games as he suffered a knee injury. Due to this incident, Nike’s stocks plummeted $1 billion the very next day. He had set a new freshman record for the short stint with Duke by setting a record of at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals in a game.
The NBA welcomes Zion Williamson. Unfortunately a rough start for the youngster as he damaged the meniscus in his right knee during a Pelicans’ preseason game against the San Antonio Spurs on October 13th. The injury didn’t drop Zion’s value one bit, in his career debut, January, 23rd against the Spurs tho a loss 121 to 117, Zion scored 22 points and shot 8 for 11 overall in 18 minutes of play. Pelicans were very watchful on how much time he spent on the court due to the seriousness of his recent injury. His 22 points surpassed Anthony Davis on his debut back in October 2012 with 21 points. As we all know Zion replaced Anthony Davis as the face of the franchise in New Orleans, one memory that he had on Anthony was the day he did not sign an autograph for him as a youngster which Zion has quoted that he was really hurt because of that and he'll make a point as an NBA player to try to sign everybody’s autograph. Zion has been compared to LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson to name a few - classified as superstar status at only 19 years of age. It should only be a matter of time before you’ll see him on a box of Wheaties, the cover of NBA 2K, Dunkin’ commercials and before long acting in Hollywood. What a sensational game on Sunday night against the Lakers with Zion’s career high 35 points night. Tho the Pelicans lost the game 122 - 114, this will be one team to reckon with for years to come as long as they have Zion and his superhero powers on their side, the Pelicans will be nearly unstoppable.
