The Washington Redskins team name has been under pressure for a long time. Now, they’ve decided to change it. The team made the right decision, but the wrong, at the same time. Here’s why.
When the pressure came on for the team to change the name, from Fedex and other protesters, I did not see it happening. I thought “Why would they? They’ve built such a brand with that logo, and name.” Then, when I found they would most likely make the move, I blamed Snyder and the Redskins. But, when you take a deep dive, you can’t blame Dan Snyder or the Redskins at all. The blame is on the people putting pressure on the team to make this powerful move.
And who are those people? Those people are not Native Americans. The Washington Post conducted a poll back in 2016 that showed that 9 out of 10 Native Americans don’t take any offense to the name, and actually embrace and celebrate it.
If you’re going to change the Redskins, then change everything. How about the Yankees, Braves, Indians, Cavaliers, and Braves. If I was a Redskins fan I’d be flat out upset. As a Yankees fan, I obviously have Shirts, Jerseys, hats, decorations and more with a Yankees logo and name on it. If all my stuff went to waste, I’d be calling for Brian Cashman’s head.
Roger Goodell, commissioner of the league, said back in January of 2018 that he doesn’t see a name change ever happening. He said this on ESPN’s morning show Golic and Wingo in 2018, "And I think the interesting thing is that Dan Snyder has really worked in the Native American community to better understand their perspective.” The Redskins owner Dan Snyder has long believed he would never change the name. In a USA Today interview in 2013, Snyder said “It’s that simple. NEVER - you can put that in all caps.” But, here he is, saying to ESPN analyst Max Kellerman that he will “stand on a podium and announce the new name.”
The big question is, when. Timing is everything. Players have announced and shown they will kneel during the National Anthem, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has even apologized to Colin Kaepernick for the mistreatment when he started that movement. The NFL has even gone to the lengths of playing the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” So, I don’t think a name perceived as racist can be tolerated in a season like this one.
