Tom Brady is one of the most polarizing athletes in professional sports today. If you don’t believe me, just go checkout how crazy the internet went over a picture.
Leave it to Tom Brady to break the internet and disrupt the sports news cycle with a simple picture. It didn’t matter that Patrick Mahomes was three days away from participating in his first Super Bowl against Jimmy Garoppolo. Everything in the sports media world stopped, and all the talking heads were focused on a simple black and white picture Tom Brady posted on Twitter and Instagram with no explanation. It also left a lot of Patriots fans confused, and wondering what cryptic message the GOAT was sending. It also just flat out got some people, usually known as “Patriots Haters” upset.
Debates began online whether Brady was walking towards the field or away from the field. This had a lot of people wondering if Brady was trying to tell them that he had decided to walk away from the game.
One YouTube user commented:
“I think that Brady is looking (at the) Kobe situation and realizes how precious life is, and now he’s going to want to spend more time with his family. I think that Brady is going to announce his retirement”
The commenter mentioned Kobe, and he’s the closest to what this picture represented, but more on that later.
If you look at the picture, Brady is clearly walking towards the field. Zoom in on his right leg and you will see that the way it’s bent, it would be impossible for him to be walking away from the field.
Brady is entering free agency for the first time is his twenty year career, and the picture sparked many different theories. Some people believed that it was Tom Brady telling the world that he’s leaving the Patriots. Others believed it was Brady announcing his retirement. Some people believed Tom Brady was just trying to ruin the Super Bowl and take all the shine of his “biggest threat” the “NFL’s Michael Jordan” Patrick Mahomes.
It Turns out, it’s not even related to football.
"Am told that this tweet is not related to Tom Brady’s football future. Repeat, not related to his football future. But the speculation sure is fun - Adam Shefter"
Shefter ruined everybody's good time, and I wish he would have waited a day or so, because the speculation that could have come out of this would have been amazing.
Mike Reiss took it even further today, and deducted that Brady’s picture was a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, posting this tweet showing the similarities between the two.
Whatever it all means, Tom Brady probably isn’t sorry that the world stopped to talk about his picture. For the people who are blaming him for taking the shine off the Super Bowl, if you wouldn’t have reacted, then the tweet wouldn’t have mattered. Maybe, people are starting to realize that the Super Bowl shines a little brighter when Tom Brady is involved.
