The Philadelphia Flyers are one of the big surprises in the NHL this season and there are many reasons behind their success. The Flyers have been great all year with a record of 38-20-7, but they have been especially great lately. They are on a 6 game winning streak and have shot up in the NHL standings because of their impressive streak. Before the Flyers went on the streak, they were 6th in the Metropolitan Division, now they are all the way up to second in the division and have a huge game tonight against the number 1 team, the Washington Capitals. The Capitals have been struggling lately and the Flyers are only 3 points behind them. It seems like perfect timing as the 2 teams match up tonight in a massive game. Philadelphia has been extremely impressive lately and do not seem like they will stop anytime soon.
The Flyers are in second place in the hardest division in hockey, with the Washington Capitals 3 points ahead of them and the Pittsburgh Penguins 1 point behind them in 3rd place. They are 8-2-0 in their last 10 game which is the best in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers have been fantastic lately, but they are also being helped out by some other teams. The Penguins, Capitals, Islanders, and Blue Jackets have all struggled in their last 10 games. The key to this special Flyers team has undoubtedly been their goaltenders. Carter Hart is the player that the Flyers have been looking for years. Philadelphia has not had a great, sustainable goalie in many years. Hart is a young goalie is very good now and will only get better because he is still only 21 years old. Hart is 22-12-3, with a 2.51 goals against average, and a .909 Save Percentage. While the stats do not seem very impressive, he certainly passes the eye test and has been outstanding all year long. Brian Elliot is the backup goalie and he is 15-7-4, with a 2.90 goals against average, .899 save percentage. His stats are also misleading as he has been a very serviceable backup for Hart.
It is impossible to mention the Flyers and their recent success without bringing up Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny. Couturier is the Flyers best and most effective player. He has 21 goals, 37 assists, for a total of 58 points which is 2nd most on the team. Couturier does all of this on the offensive side of the ice while also being one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL. He plays on the power play, penalty kill, and pretty much any other situation imaginable. Konecny has 23 goals, 37 assists, which sums up to 60 points, the most on the team. Konecny is a mainstay on the first line and power play. He is a great goal scorer and playmaker for the Flyers. Konecny always brings energy and toughness to the team while making sure to get other the other teams' skin. Kevin Hayes, Claude Giroux, James Van Riemsdyk, Ivan Provorov, Scott Laughton, Jakub Voracek, and Matt Niskanen have all been key parts to the success for Philadelphia this season. There have been many great players and factors to this Flyers season.
Overall, Philadelphia has had a very pleasantly surprising season. It has been a decent amount of years since the Flyers have been this relevant in the sports crazed city of Philadelphia. This time of year the talk of the town would usually be the 76ers and Phillies, but it is the Flyers right now. They are playing very exciting hockey right now and have a great chance to not only make the playoffs, but make some serious noise once they get there. The Flyers have been terrific this season and might finish the season even better.
