David Silva - if you don't know him already - is a Spanish soccer player known as 'Merlin' because of his magical soccer skill. Silva has a had a great soccer career with 4 different teams: Valencia, Eibar, Celta and Manchester City (Man City). He can play in a winger position or center attack, but is best known as a center midfielder who controls the tempo of the game. Silva was born January 8th, 1986 in Arguineguin, Spain - a small coastal town in The Canary Islands. Silva will play his last games for Man City this month in the Champions League. Allow me to explain why Merlin's career was so remarkable and how he got to where he is today.
David Silva began playing soccer in the youth team of UD San Fernando. He started playing soccer as a goalkeeper before he went to play in the winger position as a teenager. Silva tried to mirror his soccer idol Michael Laudrup, a Danish attacking midfielder who played for Ajax, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus. At the age of 14, Silva received an offer to become a youth player at Valencia CF in Spain. Silva accepted the offer and stayed on the youth team until he was 17.
In 2003, Silva started his senior career on the Valencia second team. Silva played 14 games and scored 1 goal. Silva was moved up after that year to the first team for Valencia in the La Liga (the Spanish league). David Silva played for his childhood club from 2004-2010. In 2004 Silva went on loan to another La Liga team, SD Eilbar until 2005. With Eilbar, he scored 4 goals in 35 games. In 2005, Silva went back on loan to another La Liga team. This time he went to RC Celta for a year and scored 4 goals in 34 games.
Silva then moved back to Valencia from 2006 to 2010 and played about 100 games and scored 21 times. After the 2010 season with Valencia, Silva began receiving better offers elsewhere so he decided the best option was to be transferred. David Silva went to one of the biggest clubs in the world - Man City.
Since that moment forward he has been one of the best center midfielders in the world. He has played over 400 games for Man City and has scored 60 goals and 93 assists. Silva has won 2 FA Cups, 5 League Cups and Four Premier League titles.
When you look at these stats and see how long David Silva has been playing for Man City this might go down as one of the best Premier League careers ever. Silva has been such an inspiration to so many and I hope he can stay healthy in the last few games of his magical career. We will miss you, Merlin!
