The Pirates could be on the way to Bradenton this Summer for Baseball. The Steelers made some solid draft picks. The Penguins are ready to play hockey, but the NHL isn't just yet. All of these topics will be highlighted in the first edition of Steel City Talk.
The Pirates do not have a team that is ready to win. That doesn't mean however they won't play. The new proposals for the MLB season would put the Pirates with the Yankees. If the MLB wants to start in June then there will be no fans. This new proposal could hurt the Pirates because they will have no promotions or ticket sales to keep them running as a franchise. After becoming the first MLB franchise to cut staff, the Pirates are in for a bumpy ride.
The Penguins are trying to stay ready for a possible return to hockey. If any team benefited from the stoppage it was the Pens. They were mightily struggling and needed a break. I guess this wasn't what they thought of, but it happened. When the season resumes the Pens could be huge threats with Jake Guentzel coming back from injury around May. Maybe this season is over, but don't tell the Penguins that just yet.
The Steelers had a good draft, but not an eye opening draft. They drafted talent with their second and third round picks, starting with Chase Claypool. Chase was a standout receiver at Notre Dame. He caught 13 TD's and had 1000 receiving yards. He should be a valuable asset to Big Ben and this offense. Alex Highsmith was a star at Charlotte University. He had 15 sacks last year along with 21.5 tackles for loss. If Mike Tomlin can use this guy at Line backer or Defensive End, this could be a steal for the Steelers.
On Day 3 of the draft the Steelers took a running back early in the 4th round. Anthony McFarland had a career high 8 rushing TD's this year but didn't eclipse 1000 rushing yards. He had a 1000 rushing yard season 1 year ago. This could be the type of speed guy the Steelers don't have right now. With his natural speed McFarland is a great addition. Kevin Dotson was a solid addition to the Offensive Line. With Ramon Foster's retirement, the Steelers needed an O- lineman. This could be a steal because of Dotson's frame and potential in a Steelers offensive line. If you thought this Offensive Line was good before, they could be superb now.
With the 198th pick the Steelers selected Antoine Brooks Jr. The Cornerback from Maryland can be a star. He had 87 tackles last year as a corner. This is a crazy stat but it's true. He does struggle with actually covering people. I'm sure Mike Tomlin is gonna use Brooks like Mike Hilton. Hilton is not a great cover corner but can tackle very well. This is the same for Brooks Jr. The Steelers could get a Pro Bowl player here so, watch out AFC North. Carlos Davis was the last pick used for the Steelers in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Steelers made a wise choice here to go for more linebackers. Carlos has the look of a LB but needs coaching. He wasn't amazing at open field tackles but was good against the run. This is a good pick for the 7th round of the draft.

The Steelers looked like they needed a QB right after the draft. They made an offer to Jameis Winston to be Big Ben's backup. He said no and went to the Big Easy in New Orleans. People have been speculating that Cam Newton could come to Pittsburgh. That is not a fit for many reasons. The Steelers Offensive Line would have to do the opposite of what they did before. With Ben Roethlisberger, you don't get a running play at all. With Cam, every 5 or 6 plays you will see him take off. If there isn't a QB you like now then next year, either in the draft or Free Ageny, go after a QB.
