Heading into the 2020 NFL Draft, a lot of Draft experts and analysts were all predicting that New England Patriots would draft a quarterback and a wide receiver. The only thing predictable about Bill Belichick when it comes to the Draft is that he is never predictable. Even though people like Mel Kiper JR were screaming for Belichick to address the QB and WR positions, Belichick used his first three picks of the Draft on defensive players, and never touched a quarterback or receiver.
As an organization the Patriots seem somewhat comfortable heading into the 2020 season with Jarrett Stidham as their quarterback. After Tom Brady left the Patriots and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England re-signed veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer for his third stint with the team. Even though a lot of people are predicting that Stidham will be handed the keys to the kingdom, Hoyer’s agent said the biggest reason that Hoyer signed with the Patriots was because he wanted to be able to compete for a starting position, and Hoyer believed he could compete in New England. So before everybody anoints Stidham as the next starting QB of the New England Patriots, the Patriots quarterback situation won’t be answered until after the preseason.
Even though the Patriots didn’t address the quarterback situation in the draft, they did make a couple moves over the weekend signing Undrafted free agent quarterbacks J’Mar Smith out of Louisiana Tech and Brian Lewerke out of Michigan State.
At this point it feels like both men were signed to camp bodies and possibly compete for a practice squad spot. The Patriots are not afraid to carry three quarterbacks during the season, even if a lot of general managers believe carrying three quarterbacks is a wasted roster space. So there is a possibility that maybe either Lewerke or Smith make the Patriots as the third quarterback.
In the video below Ray Rauth from DPN Sports Talk streamed live on SportsCastr and discussed the Patriots quarterback situation from the time Tom Brady left, explores why Belichick did not chose a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, Patriots players confidence in Stidham, and what impresses them the most about the second year quarterback.
