If I could talk to myself two years ago, I would warn myself that I'm about to make myself look like an idiot.
Week 4 of the 2017 season the Patriots and Panthers were tied late in the fourth quarter, and Deatrich Wise Jr who I predicted was going to be a star sacked Cam Newton on third down. That was it, the Patriots were going to get the ball back and Tom Brady was going to lead New England to victory.
Then I noticed the flag. Stephon Gilmore was called for a hands to the face penalty. It gave the Panthers a first down, and ultimately the Panther won the game.
With a clear head and not irrational at all I said what every Patriots fan was thinking. I said I was done with this bum, and the Patriots need to cut Stephon Gilmore.
Fast forward to right now, and obviously I was right. All Gilmore has accomplished since I sent that tweet was:
#1 He defended the final pass of the AFC Championship game against the Jacksonville Jaguars to send the Patriots to their second straight Super Bowl appearance.
#2 He had an outstanding season in 2018 being selected to his second Pro Bowl of his career. Gilmore was also given the honor of being selected as a First Team All Pro for the first time in his NFL career.
#3 He was lights out in Super Bowl 53. He iced the Rams which gave Tom Brady his sixth Super Bowl ring when he picked off Jared Goff. To this day as much as I love Julian Edelman I will argue that Gilmore should have been the MVP.
#4 In 2019 he lead the league with six interceptions taking on every teams best receiver in man to man coverage. He was given another Pro Bowl honor. He was selected as a unanimous First team All Pro.
#5 Stephon Gilmore took home the prize as the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year.
I really hate to say I told you so, but do you all agree with me now? Signing Gilmore was a mistake, the Patriots never should have moved on from Malcolm Butler, and they should have cut bait when they had the chance and got Gilmore out of New England.
We all make mistakes, and I said a lot of stupid things about Stephon Gilmore, and I am so happy that he makes me look dumber and dumber every year.
