The New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 17-10 in a Super Bowl rematch that was won on defense. The Eagles started the game well coming out to a 10-0 lead at the start of the second quarter but the Patriots responded with 17 unanswered points shutting Philadelphia out in the final 42 minutes. The NFL's best defense held the Eagles to just 255 total yards while collecting five sacks. It is not that big of a surprise that the defense is what won New England the game although there were questions coming into the game as to how good the defense really was after getting torn apart against the Ravens.
After the Eagles got off to a hot start the Patriots quickly adjusted and from then on the Eagles could do nothing with the ball against a disciplined Patriots defense. At one point, the Patriots forced six consecutive punts before Philly's failed Hail Mary attempt and turnover on downs inside the final minutes. Now it is quite obvious that the Patriots defense is much better than the offense this season and leading the way. Is Tom Brady ok with this? I am not so sure.
Tom Brady and the offense had a quiet night as Tom Brady completed just 26 of 47 passes for 216 yards with no touchdowns. The only touchdown drive he led ended with a 15-yard double pass from Julian Edelman to Phillip Dorsett in the third quarter. After that the offense failed to produce another drive longer than 40 yards. On the ground, the Patriots only rushed for 74 yards with an average of just 3.4 yards per carry. Despite the lack of production on offense the Patriots still got the win even though it wasn't pretty.
I have come to expect at this point for the Patriots defense to win them games. I have no problem if that is the case because it is pretty clear what the defense is capable of doing. But it is also evident that Tom Brady does not seem to be accepting his new role. After the game he said, "I just wish we'd score more points." He does have a point due to the lack of weapons he has on offense but then again the team is 9-1 and has the best record in the league.
The reason I say this is because the way he is whining after these games, you would think that they have an even record and aren't playing well. Even if the offense has not been at the top of their game, as long as the defense keeps playing the way they have been the Patriots should be in great shape to make another run at the Super Bowl yet again.
It is definitely not the way we are used to seeing the Patriots run with the defense leading the way. I think this is the reason why Tom Brady is still not satisfied despite the team winning. He has been so used to the team running around him and the offense leading the way that he is having a hard time accepting the fact that the defense and not him is the reason why the Patriots are 9-1. Tom Brady, you are still the greatest of all time but in order to get that seventh ring, it might be the defense that is the reason why and that's ok.
