Jimmy Garoppolo could very well become a three-time Super Bowl champion in a couple of weeks when he plays in Super Bowl 54. But, I would like to remind the world that Jimmy G has never started in a Super Bowl game, and he's a two-time champion all because of Tom Brady. I think I would also like to remind Pat's Nation that we have been able to celebrate 6 Super Bowl championships because of Tom Brady, including two Super Bowl appearances after Jimmy Garoppolo was traded away.
I know it sounds like I've spent a lot of time this week trying to discredit Jimmy Garoppolo, and maybe I have, but discrediting him would have been completely unintentional. Jimmy is a good quarterback and he has a good future in front of him. All I'm trying to do is remind people that Garoppolo is no longer a New England Patriot and we need to stop celebrating him like he is. I'm not excited that Jimmy G gets to play Super Bowl Sunday when Tom Brady's going to be sitting at home watching the game on the couch, and I don't understand why people in Patriots Nation are acting like this is some great thing. But, what's been even more frustrating is the chatter I'm seeing on Twitter and on my YouTube comments saying that Jimmy Garoppolo should be the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots and that Bill Belichick screwed the Patriots future by trading him away and keeping Tom Brady.
First of all blaming Belichick for trading Garoppolo is just ignorant and uneducated. I think by now everybody knows that it was the Patriots owner Robert Kraft who forced Belichick's hand, but that's not even what I'm here to debate. I'm here to debate whether or not the Patriots made the right decision going with the greatest quarterback to play the game over his backup.
A lot of this conversation hasn't just been sparked because Garoppolo finds himself in the Super Bowl because of his team's outstanding defense and running game. It has also become a topic of conversation because of the uncertainty of Brady's contract status and the possibility he won't return to New England next season. Fortunately, I don't live in the world of hypotheticals and I can only discuss facts, and here's the facts: After Belichick traded Garoppolo for a bag of potatoes Tom Brady was selected as the league MVP and brought the Patriots back to the Super Bowl. Having Jimmy Garoppolo wouldn't have made a lick of difference in the Patriots Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Brady set Super Bowl records throwing for 505 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-33 losing effort. The Patriots and Tom Brady battled their way back to the Super Bowl the next season where they beat the LA Rams and brought a sixth Lombardi Trophy back to New England.
If Belichick won the power struggle and let Tom Brady walk away, there is no guarantee that Jimmy Garoppolo brings the Patriots back to the Super Bowl. When we look at the season that just was, could Garoppolo have accomplished any better throwing the ball to N'Keal Harry, Phillip Dorsett, Mohamed Sanu, and a broken Julian Edelman?
Living in the world of facts the Patriots are at a crossroads that we've all been dreading for the last ten years. That doesn't mean the Patriots made a mistake sticking with Tom Brady, it just means we were able to watch the Patriots win another Super Bowl with no guarantee the other guy would have gotten us there. There's also no guarantee that Tom Brady isn't back next season, If Bill Belichick gets him some legitimate offensive weapons, the Patriots can easily make their way to Super Bowl 55. Of course that's living in hypotheticals, but it's a very real possibility.
We all knew that there was a good possibility that Jimmy Garoppolo was going to be special in the NFL. But, we also knew that Tom Brady was special and he is continuing to be special, and if you’re one of the idiots burning his jersey, or you’re constantly talking bad about him, or now sitting on your perch screaming about Jimmy G - You don’t deserve Tom Brady, you don’t deserve the Patriots, you don’t deserve any success they’ve had and will have moving forward into the future. The Patriots made the right decision keeping the SIX time Super Bowl Champion, and the GOAT of the National Football League. Garoppolo is good, Tom Brady is great, and even if he left the Patriots this season, he brought us to two Super Bowls since Jimmy was traded away. To put that into perspective for you. The last time the Detroit Lions won a playoff game was 1991. Tom Brady brought the Patriots to three straight Super Bowls, two of those without Jimmy G backing him up.
The Patriots made the right decision, and there is nothing anybody could say that would make me change my mind.
