Pat McAfee to Face Adam Cole at NXT Takeover XXX

What a crazy time to be a wrestling fan, former Indianapolis Colts punter, Pat McAfee will face the longest reigning NXT Champion, Adam Cole on Saturday, August 22nd during NXT Takeover XXX at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. McAfee does it all: sports analyst, stand-up comedian, podcaster and former punter for the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-2016. He was a First Team All-Pro in 2014, a Pro Bowler in 2014 and 2016 and his most memorable play was when he gave the smackdown on Denver Broncos’ kick returner Trindon Holiday out of bounds in a 2013 Sunday Night matchup. He currently works part time with the WWE since his retirement from the NFL in 2016, he has appeared on pre-shows before the pay-per-view matches and colors on WWE NXT. Pat McAfee is famously known for his sports podcast, The Pat McAfee Show on YouTube, which airs in his hometown of Indianapolis where he invited special guest, NXT superstar Adam Cole to his studio. The two had a rocky relationship from the start which escalated further into a war of words between the two belligerent hotheads on every social media platform.

Last month, Cole appeared on the Pat McAfee Show, at first it seemed like a friendly interview as Cole recounted his long journey of becoming a pro wrestler and looking back on all of his hardships and accomplishments. As Cole finishes the segment, he proclaims himself to be “The king of that brand.” McAfee and the rest of the co-hosts chuckled as they felt Cole is clearly NOT the face of NXT but a pompous, short and angry little wrestler. Then, McAfee in his brassy manner brings up that Cole was trained by the legendary WWE “Heartbreak Kid,” Shawn Michaels but will never amount to anything like the Hall of Famer. A flustered Cole defended himself as he stated his mentor believes in him and that he will go far in the WWE organization. Hence, he boasted once again, he holds the longest record in NXT history of 403 days as champion. McAfee continues the bashing on how Michaels made a name for himself with no help from others and how Cole cheated to achieve championship status by surrounding himself with super talented people. Cole completely loses it after McAfee makes fun of his statue, the former NXT Champion shot up from his chair, slammed the microphone to the floor and cursed repeatedly while storming out of the studio. The mayhem would not end here!

Fast forward to this past Tuesday when McAfee was commentating NXT and became a wiseguy by tormententing Cole on his size (again) but in retaliation, Cole splashed water on the former 7th round pick who went totally berserk. They exchanged insults to one another when suddenly a flashback to the past, McAfee punted Cole straight in the jaw! McAfee would later call his signature move, “A right foot to the mouth,” as Cole left the arena with an undisclosed injury. The following morning on ESPN’s “Get Up” hosted by Mike Greenberg, McAfee was asked if he would accept an offer from NXT Senior Producer and wrestling icon, Triple H to face Adam Cole at NXT Takeover XXX which he replied without hesitation, “I accept.”

An overall 3 time world champion professional wrestler competing against one of the greatest NFL punters of all time will no doubt make an electrifying pay per view event. Another shrewd move by the WWE to expand their audience base by luring another exNFL player to become part of the WWE family. Hardcore football fans like myself would jump on the bandwagon and become loyal WWE fans to incorporate professional athletes in their company. Cha-ching! This matchup could be over in a matter of seconds or be drawn out too long like most wrestling matches are but many could see WWE rookie/heal, Pat McAfee pull a dirty move grabbing Cole’s head like a football and punting it right out of the stadium for the victory. Adam Cole should come out with the win as he is the experienced fighter and should easily handle an out of shape retired athlete. If McAfee puts up a good clean fight, the 33 year old may want to transfer from his desk job to a full time wrestler on the NXT roster. Will Adam Cole avoid embarrassment or will Pat McAfee win it “For the Brand?”

Nothing sweeter than looking up at the upcoming Wrestlemania XXXVII marquee featuring two gridiron greats: Pat McAfee vs Rob Gronkowski. Book it Vince McMahon!
