Ever since the Green Bay Packers traded up in the 2020 NFL Draft and selected Jordan Love it has been a non-stop barrage of stories, rumors, opinions, and Twitter outrage. The saga has been on my docket of stories to follow, and a week removed from the Draft the only conclusion that I can come to is… The Green Bay Packers better hope they made the right decision drafting Jordan Love.
Just to recap, Packers fans initial reaction to the selection was confusion and rage. Unsurprisingly Twitter was a blaze immediately after the pick, with some Green Bay fans calling the Love selection "the stupidest pick in the history of the Draft". Obviously, like everybody else in the football world, Packers fans believed that the team was going to finally get Aaron Rodgers some offensive weapons. Green Bay had just been to the NFC Championship Game, losing to the San Francisco 49ers. The Packers needed receivers, not Rodgers replacement.
A lot of people have given their opinion on the selection. Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre has publicly supported Aaron Rodgers and believes that Rodgers should be upset by the pick. Of course Favre is all too familiar with the Packers bringing in a quarterback when their franchise quarterback still has some gas left in the tank.
In the coming days the rumors started floating around. The first real bombshell was that Green Bay had selected Love because Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was "tired of Rodgers antics." It was also reported that LeFleur wants to turn the Packers into a run first team, and by drafting Love, it gives Green Bay leverage over Aaron Rodgers. The theory is, by selecting Love, Rodgers will put up less of a fight with the new offensive game plan, out of fear that he could lose his starting job to Love. Having another quarterback on the roster puts a little more pressure on Rodgers.
If there is any truth to this whatsoever, Green Bay is playing a dangerous game of chicken with a guy who is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. I may be speaking out of turn, but I guarantee you, Aaron Rodgers is not worried in the slightest about losing his job to Jordan Love.
Even if we assume Love becomes who the Packers think he's going to be, he's at least two years away from being NFL ready. Aaron Rodgers knows that the Packers need him as their quarterback if Green Bay wants any chance of competing for a Super Bowl the next two seasons.
There have also been some other rumblings that the Packers believe Jordan Love is Patrick Mahomes.
If the Packers actually believe that they have the next Patrick Mahomes in their ranks, they better hope they're right. Making the decision they did, and selecting Love has opened them up to all of the rumor and speculation they are dealing with now.
If there is bad blood between Rodgers and the Packers, it's something that they are going to have to deal with until Love is ready, and when he is ready, you better hope that you've hit on a third straight quarterback, because people's patience will run out quickly. Jordan Love has been put in an impossible situation, and you have to feel for him and all the scrutiny he's going to face because of the organization's decision.
Green Bay is only going to come out of this thing one of two ways. They are either going to look like geniuses, or they are going to look like morons for wasting a prime opportunity to return to a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers. They just better hope that they're right.
