The resuming of the PGA Tour has been a successful story so far as we move into the FedEx Cup playoffs where the best of the best compete for the prize of the FedEx Cup trophy. The first leg of the playoff's is the Northern Trust which has the top 125 players playing in it fighting to get a spot in the BMW Championship next week. Below is a commentary on how some key players performed during this week's PGA Tour event. For a more in-depth commentary, go check out my recap video below of the Northern Trust on my SportsCastr channel MitchySports.
Dustin Johnson was the winner of this tournament. Johnson had his best tournament performance of his career winning by 11 strokes! Johnson managed to dominate in all categories including putting where he lead in feet made and strokes gained in putting over Harris English. Johnson was able to play great from the start with a first and second round of 67 and 60 giving him the early lead. In these first two rounds Johnson played golf that no one thought he could do after his knee surgery earlier last year. Johnson was able to have a career round of 60 and have the second best score on this golf course just behind Scottie Scheffler. In the third and fourth rounds, Johnson was able to bring it home with a 64 and 63 keeping his early momentum and continue to abliderate the rest of this strong playoff field. In the end, Dustin Johnson had a very convincing win moving him to number one in the FedEx Cup standings and in the official world golf rankings.
Harris English placed second this week. English this season has locked in his ability to choose events to play in next season. English is now inside the top 10 in FedEx cup standings and has a great chance at winning it all. Overall English played better than expected this week. The main thing he improved upon was his wedge game. English was really dialed in this week finishing top 10 in proximity to the hole due to his improved wedge game. But in the Final round things started to fall apart for English as he went from being five shots back to eleven shots back due to all of the improvements going away. Overall Harris English had a good week to start the playoffs moving into the top 10 setting himself up for the Tour Championship.
Scottie Scheffler placed fourth this week. Scheffler had a great first three rounds but chocked under pressure. Scheffler shot the course record round of 59 tieing for the second lowest round on the PGA Tour behind Jim Furyk's 58. Scheffler best attribute this week was his iron play. Scheffler was able to hit solid shots all around the fairway this week. As a rookie Scheffler has had a solid year so far being inside the top 15 in FedEx cup standings but still needs to work on keeping momentum throughout the tournament. Over time Scheffler should be able to do this as he continues his young career.
The PGA Tour had a great start to the playoff''s this season with Dustin Johnson winning the Northern Trust. Next week the spotlight will be on Dustin Johnson as he tries to continue his domination over the tour with a combination of distance and touch when he is at his best. The BMW championship is a tournament that Johnson has won in the past. He will come in as the front runner to win. Will he live up to the expectations and win the FedEx Cup. In the next two weeks as the playoffs continue on.
