There is a possibility that Tom Brady could leave the New England Patriots in free agency. Would Jarrett Stidham be able to handle the load as starting quarterback?
Tom Brady is a free agent and the entire NFL universe is patiently waiting for his decision. The New England will have a lot of decisions to make if Brady moves on, including: Can Bill Belichick hand the starting role to Jarrett Stidham?
Jarrett Stidham has split up Pats Nation. There are three different schools of thought. One group believes that the Patriots drafted him with the intentions of Stidham eventually becoming the starting quarterback of the Patriots. There's another group who believes Belichick wasted a draft pick and that Brian Hoyer would have been a better backup, and Stidham will be nothing more than a backup in the NFL. I fall into the third group of people who have no idea what Stidham is going to turn into.
Stidham shows all the potential to turn into a capable starting quarterback, that's the issue. Stidham may forever be nothing more than a body behind centre, but to me, it seems like he will never be good enough to take the Patriots to the next level.
What's stopping Jarrett Stidham from being the Patriots next quarterback? - Unfortunately, he gets into his own head too often, and while Tom Brady will go down as one of the most clutch performer's ever in professional sports, Stidham can't seem to handle the pressure.
"Stidham has regularly crumbled in big moments and his results under pressure are poor. His struggles when forced to speed up his process are concerning. Stidham's best chance for success comes in a timing-based offense that keeps him in rhythm. Stidham profiles as quality backup quarterback but his ceiling as a starter is low." - The Draft Network
If you were going to make the case to give the starting job to Stidham, you could look at two different factors. Number one, Stidham actually put up decent numbers in the preseason going 61-90 / 731 / 4. He actually fared better than Jimmy Garoppolo did his first preseason with the Patriots when he went 46-79 / 618 / 5.
Stidham would also be the cheapest option, unless the Belichick tried to find his next starting quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft. But if you were going to make a list of potential quarterbacks where would Stidham sit on that list?
"By far the cheapest option on the list, Jarrett Stidham could see himself thrust into the starting position next season if the New England Patriots choose not to spend cap space or draft capital on bringing in a new quarterback. Despite struggling in the limited regular season playing time he was given as a rookie, Stidham showed promise in the preseason, putting up 731 passing yards and four passing touchdowns over the course of the entire preseason. Whether or not Stidham was just inflating numbers against second and third-string defenses is yet to be seen, but with New England facing an expensive offseason ahead, Stidham’s six-figure salary could play a big reason in him being named starter." - Brady McAlear, Musket Fire
I think at the end of the day Stidham would do a fine job, but nothing more. Stidham could be a good stop gap, but Belichick would need to find a permanent solution sooner rather than later.
