Earl Thomas’ tenure in Baltimore is over. Thomas has been cut by the Ravens following an altercation with fellow safety Chuck Clark. The official notice says that the Ravens terminated his contract for personal conduct which adversely affected the Ravens.
It is likely there is more to the story. Thomas posted a video of the Ravens practice, which is not allowed by the Ravens, Thomas has a history of acting up, and there are reports surfacing that he had been missing numerous practices. Additionally, there was a lot of negative drama regarding Earl Thomas and his family in the offseason.
DeShon Elliott is the only on roster replacement for Thomas. The Ravens could shift Jimmy Smith to safety and/or resign Brandon Carr and place him at safety. Thomas lined up all over the field. It’s tough to find that kind of versatility in a safety.
The Ravens are trying to not have to deal with the cap hit. By terminating the contract they wouldn’t need to pay Thomas what he is owed. Thomas will likely fight this, and work on getting his money. Regardless, the Ravens still gave a 20 million dollar signing bonus to a player who played one season of football for them.
It takes a lot for a top safety to leave two of the most respected franchises in the NFL in the Seahawks and Ravens. Thomas has been heavily rumored to the Cowboys, but the Cowboys will have to decide if the off the field issues are worth the risk of signing an aging safety, no longer at the top of his game.
