Credible people believe Bill Belichick could pull off one of the biggest deals in franchise history.
If you would have told me two weeks ago that the Patriots had any chance of trading for, or waiting a year and signing Deshaun Watson, I would have told you that you are out of your mind. I like to believe that my head is full of football knowledge, and the common sense part of my brain says there is no possible way that the Houston Texans would do anything to jeopardize their future, and there's no way that they would move on from a talent like Watson.
That was two weeks ago, this is now. Two weeks ago I also would have told you that there's no way that Bill O'Brien would lose his mind and trade away one of the best wide receivers in the National Football League for an inconsistent running back that they didn't need. I also would have told you that there was no way you would ever and I mean ever see Tom Brady wearing any Jersey but a Patriots jersey, and yet here we are. So is the Patriots getting their hands on Deshaun Watson really that crazy of an idea?
I'm sure that the entire AFC, and more specifically the AFC East, is thrilled to see Tom Brady moving out of New England and heading over to Tampa Bay. Unfortunately if you're a Patriots fan, that means there is a possibility that the 20-year reign of the Patriots could come to an end this season. But, it’s time for us to get excited about something that will never happen, because there are credible people questioning whether or not Bill Belichick could pull off one of the biggest deals in franchise history.
As Patriots fans it doesn't take much to get us excited, and it doesn’t take much for us to believe that the unexpected will happen. When Deshaun Watson sent out a tweet saying “I don't know how I'ma make it out of here clean. can't even keep track of who plays for the other team, iconic duos rip and split at the seams” patriot fans automatically took that to mean welcome to Foxboro DeShaun Watson.
I love Patriots Twitter, and it always outlines how unrealistic of a fanbase we can be from time to time. But we all can't deny that when Tyler Conway of the Bleacher Report responded to Watson with a tweet of his own that said “I'm just saying you could do better, tell me have you heard that lately?” It included a picture of Bill Belichick holding a telephone. Of course a simple tweet meant nothing, until Conway showed us the picture that put the speculation and hype into hyperdrive. Deshaun Watson liked the response.
Before we start planning the next Super Bowl parade, we have to remember that Deshaun Watson is only 24 years old, and he's one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. I think any team outside of maybe the Kansas City Chiefs would jump on the opportunity to get Watson if they could. The issue is the Texans have control of Watson for the next two seasons, so the only way that Belichick could get his hands on the sensational DeShaun Watson would be via trade, which sounds next to Impossible unless we're talking about Bill O'Brien.
Watson showed his displeasure with O'Brien's decision to trade away DeAndre Hopkins, and even though even Bill O'Brien is smart enough to know he needs to keep DeShaun Watson, a little bit descent in the locker room could send the hot tempered, unqualified Bill O'Brien into such a temprature tantrum that he could actually do something stupid like trade one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL to the New England Patriots.
Let me make it clear by saying the odds of this happening are very slim, but we also have to believe where there's smoke there's fire. We've seen stories like this play out before, there was a good chunk of us who didn't believe Brady was going to leave the Patriots, and I think the majority of NFL fans never fathomed DeAndre Hopkins being traded. Yet here we are, the Patriots need a quarterback and Bill O'Brien has proven that he's not suited to run a football team, and Patriots fans are a desperate fan base who will believe any story that anybody could post on Twitter.
