On Sunday at TPC Twin Cities the PGA tour had the 3M Open. The second edition of this tournament took a big step in the right direction attracting more all star caliber players and continued to cultivate sports fans. Below is a description of how some key players performed during this week's edition of the 3M Open. For a more in-depth commentary, go check out my final round coverage and analysis below!!!
Michael Thompson: Michael Thompson played great and exceeded all expectations this week. Thompson was able to shoot consistent rounds in the 60's throughout the week. The best round for Thompson was from opening day where he shot a seven under round of 64. Thompson's main weakness coming into the week was hitting fairways from off the tee. This week was different because Thompson was able to improve this by finding a shot shape that worked for him - the fade. Thompson also had a lot of strong points in his game coming into the week. The strongest point coming in was his short game. Thompson was able to keep control around the greens and within 100 yards even when the conditions and the wind became more difficult. In the final round Thompson was able to wrap up the tournament strongly finishing with two birdies on the last three holes. This finish was strong enough to carry Michael Thompson to his first win in seven years.
Adam Long 2nd place: Adam Long also was able to perform better than expectations coming into this week. Long was not really in any sort of contention to win until the weekend. A round of 63 on Saturday was good enough to bring him into the top ten coming into the final round. This third round included eight birdies and no bogeys as the main highlights. The main strengths in Long's game where the approach game and the short game. Long was able to use his Golf IQ and short game abilities to work this golf course when the conditions grew harder throughout the week. Long also was able to overcome his struggles to keep up with the rest of the field with distance off the tee. Long's finding of form and ability to adapt put him in second place just two shots behind Michael Thompson and got him his second finish of his career.
Matthew Wolff, T12th: Mathew Wolff was the defending champion at this tournament coming into the week and did not meet my expectations. Wolff was only at times able to take advantage of his prior winning experience. Which surprised a lot of other people. Wolff's best round this week was a 65 in the opening round . Wolff has lot's of weaknesses in his game. I would say the one that cost Wolff the most was his consistency with hitting greens in regulation. Wolff would at times be able to hit a stellar shot into the green and at times flopped and mis judged the distance by a wide margin. The inconsistency in Wolff's game and other struggles he had with his unorthodox swing is the reason why Wolff, a defending champion was not able to even make the top ten this week and missed expectations.
The 3M Open was a surprisingly close tournament that did not disappoint in the quality of golf. If you want to see more articles and video's about golf and other sports go check out my channel on SportsCastr called MitchySports.
